What is Pressfit?

By Neil Turner

Pressfit is a system of joints, designed specifically to speed up and simplify the installation process of Piping systems using a minimalistic approach.

The Pressfit system saves considerable time and makes the entire installation process more secure and cost-effective, and combined with their corrosion-resistant and weatherproof nature, they benefit any project bound by cost & time constraints.

Pressfit technology provides a safe, weld-free, low-cost method of joining metals, used to replace traditional means of connecting Pipes like welding.

Unlike conventional Pipe joining methods, Pressfit does not require welding, soldering, brazing or threading. Instead, it uses pressure to join two pieces of Pipe or Tubing together for a faster and easier secure connection. Press fit piping systems are used in a wide range of industries, including commercial building, defence, food & beverage, health, mining, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, power generation, and water & wastewater treatment.

The below installation features make the system attractive for clients to use where the application is suitable:

Installation benefits

  • No welding or Hot Work permits;

  • No fire hazard during installation;

  • No consumables;

  • Increased speed of installation;

  • Can utilise non skilled manpower;

  • Reduced labour costs (can reduce labour time by up to 60%);

  • Tooling is easy to use and operate;

  • Extensive range of fittings to meet on site requirements;

  • Cost effective against threaded & welded Piping systems;

  • Built in – situ, so making alterations to meet customer outcome is much easier;

  • Job can be started and completed on site;

  • Last minute changes are easy to implement;

  • OH&S friendly;

  • The (Tooling) NovoCrimp software/Klauke I-press can be used via USB  interface to log all of the crimping operations performed and monitor correct performance.

The Pressfit product itself is top-quality and perfect for a large range of applications and industries, as below:

Product benefits

  • Can be supplied in a range of grades; namely 316L Stainless and Copper Nickel (can also be supplied in steel and copper);

  • Stainless and Copper Nickel are highly corrosion resistant;

  • Range of O-rings to suit specific applications;

  • Vast temperature range of –20°C to 200°C;

  • Pressure rated up to 580 psi, Temperature up to 200°C * (*dependent on the type of application);

  • Use of thin walled Pipe and Fittings makes system lighter than conventional welded or threaded systems;

  • Quick and easy maintenance, even when pipe is wet;

  • 72 product certifications including:

    • Watermark

    • ABS

    • Lloyds Register

    • DNV

    • ABS

  • Hygienic, as demonstrated in many food and pharmaceutical industry applications (not for the conveyance of food products);

  • Minimum load loss, resulting in faster fluid flows;

  • Excellent decorative finish avoiding need for additional painting or external protection costs;

  • Less heat conduction than other materials;

  • The use of molybdenum (Stainless steel grade 316L) results in good performance in chlorinated environments.
